Introduction to the Healing Source Book

I became interested in complementary therapies during a long term illness. After suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for many years a friend suggested I try an alternative approach. I was not interested in natural medicine at the time, but this simple suggestion opened up a whole new world to me. The natural approach to healing looks at the whole person and addresses the deeper causes of illness rather than just the symptoms. Understanding natural medicine is really about understanding human nature. I found some therapies to be so helpful to my physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing that I decided to train in these fields and try to help others gain similar benefit. This book is the culmination of 15 years of illness, searching and healing.

All deep, long lasting healing comes from healing the heart. Illness can often result from having and holding negative thoughts and feelings and healing can often result from simply transforming our negative minds into positive minds. To have a healthy heart means to have a sense of inner peace, to be at peace with ourselves and the world around us and particularly to have a mind of unconditional love towards others. If we have a strong sense of love in our heart it is difficult to be unhappy whether we are healthy or not! Establishing an experience of inner peace and love in our mind, is a large part of the healing process.

So if we want to become a successful healer we need to learn the physical skills required but we also need to learn how to heal our own heart, then we can help others do the same. I hope this book is successful in teaching you both practical healing skills and some ways to improve your quality of life by improving the quality of your mind. Without an ongoing process of inner development no matter how good our technical skills become our healing will always be superficial.

The practical techniques in this book are not difficult to learn, all you need is enthusiasm and lots of people to practice on! You can practice on your self or family and friends. All the techniques work well together and all are safe to use. You can begin practicing from day one as you read the book, indeed this is the best way to learn. There is no substitute for experience so the sooner you get started the sooner you will be able to use your new skills to help your self and others. Enthusiasm, commitment and love guarantee success.

To get the most from this book use it to develop a healing plan, for your self or others, that incorporates time each week for the therapies that feel right for your situation or for the people you are treating. For example you could have a reflexology treatment once a week as well as an aromatherapy treatment and also practice a little yoga everyday, take herbal and homeopathic remedies and do some meditation. If you develop a sustainable, gentle and enjoyable healing plan like this your health will definitely benefit from your new lifestyle.

Take a realistic long term approach, our body and mind needs time to heal it can't happen in just a few weeks. So develop something like a three month plan and approach your healing from different angles. Use the natural healing techniques explained in this book, particularly concentrating on the ones that seem to work best for you or those that instinctively feel right. Also develop a good diet, do gentle exercise, drink plenty of water and most importantly try to develop a relaxed and positive approach to life.

If you are treating others take the same approach, sit down with them and talk about the idea of developing a realistic healing plan. Try to get a feel for where they are in terms of their health and how much can realistically be achieved over the following weeks and months. What do they want to achieve? What do they think is possible? What do they think is realistic? Don't ever give false or unrealistic hope, but always stay open to their potential for healing.

Finally there is always a right and a wrong time for healing and if you listen carefully to a patient and develop your intuition you will begin to feel what is happening and be able to help the patient make the most of their situation. Human life is about inner growth, so this is the most important aspect of complementary medicine. We would all love to have good health but this is not always what we need in order to become more complete human beings. The healers real job is to help facilitate inner growth, not necessarily by giving advice which might often be misguided, but just by being there and being a living example of the true meaning of ‘good health'. Good health is really just a state of mind, so we have to work on ourselves before we can really become an effective ‘healer'. Having said that, just be natural, just be yourself, don't take things too seriously, we can still just visit a friend and give them a massage and have a chat without feeling that we have to be a ‘healer' all the time. Just being a normal, kind, patient and friendly person is very special; this is how we will heal our world.
